Communication from the EU Commission on “Nutrition Labelling”

We inform you that the Communication from the Commission C/2023/1190 “Questions and answers on the implementation of the new EU provisions on wine labeling following the amendment of Commission Regulation (EU) No. 1308/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council and Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/33"

This document provides technical answers on the application of the wine labeling rules introduced by Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 02/12/2021 and of its subsequent rectification published on 06/12/2021, specifically regarding the nutritional declaration and list of ingredients.

Please remember that the obligation to include the nutritional declaration and the list of ingredients on the label will come into force from 8 December 2023.

The document specifies (see answer to question 3) that as a general rule, these new mandatory indications must apply to wines placed on the market from 8 December 2023, however it adds that  “Wines «produced» before that date may, however, continue to be placed on the market according to the labeling requirements applicable before 8 December 2023, until stocks are exhausted”. The next point (answer 4) specifies that: "in this context, a wine product is considered to have been 'produced' when it reaches the characteristics and requirements set out in Annex VII, part II, of the CMO regulation (1308/2013) for the category of wines concerned".
