IRVO AT THE G7 SIRACUSA: Heroic Sicilian Viticulture and its Wines
“Eroica” is viticulture that takes place in extreme conditions, such as on the small Sicilian islands and in high altitude areas. This type of viticulture represents a continuous challenge for producers, who work in inaccessible and difficult to cultivate terrain, but it is precisely this peculiarity that makes the wines produced so unique and precious. In Sicily, examples of heroic viticulture can be found in Pantelleria, famous for Zibibbo and Passito, and in the Aeolian Islands, where Malvasia delle Lipari is produced with ancient techniques that enhance the quality of the wine. Starting from these considerations, the conference Sicilian heroic viticulture and its wines was structured by IRVO and curated by the oenologist Gianni Giardina.
During the meeting it emerged that Etna, with its vineyards located on the slopes of the largest active volcano in Europe, represents a shining example of heroic viticulture, characterized by vineyards at high altitudes and on terraces that require extremely demanding manual work. Here, native vines such as Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante for whites offer wines with unique characteristics, which reflect the minerality of the volcanic soil and the thousand-year history of Etna viticulture.
In the heart of Sicily, between the Madonie and Nebrodi, wines of the highest quality are produced that conquer the most demanding palates worldwide and that IRVO is committed to protecting. “The heroic viticulture, which represents approximately 5% of Sicilian wine production, is a distinctive sign of the region, characterized by a strong bond with the territory, tradition and an unparalleled passion. Producers face very difficult working conditions, with steep terrains accessible only on foot, but the results are extraordinary: wines with an unmistakable flavor, appreciated throughout the world for their authenticity”.
Gianni Giardina, underlines the importance of this production: “Heroic viticulture is synonymous with dedication and sacrifice, but also with great satisfaction. Despite the challenges, our producers manage to create wines that stand out in national and international competitions, bringing high the name of Sicily. The quality of these wines is recognized and rewarded, and we are sure that they will continue to be talked about for many years to come.”
